Finally, some good news – really good news our college students and their families can bank on.
State officials announced last week that after years of failing to live up to its promise, New Mexico’s Legislative Lottery Scholarship program will once again cover full tuition for eligible in-state students in the next academic year.
“This is what is needed at the tail end of a pandemic,” says Higher Education Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez.

While it’s shy of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s vision of free college, it’s an important step in that direction. Established in 1996, the lottery scholarship paid full tuition for eligible students from 1996 to 2015, leveling the playing field for tens of thousands of students every year. The scholarship was reduced to levels as low as 60% in 2017 due to rising tuition rates, lagging lottery sales and a lack of state funding. It covered only 66.7% of tuition at UNM this school year. The University of New Mexico recognized its 2021 spring graduating class Saturday morning with an outdoor ceremony under partly sunny skies at University Stadium. The in-person commencement ceremony was UNM’s first since December 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Approximately 1,200 out of 3,100 students eligible to receive degrees from UNM’s Albuquerque and Extended University campuses participated in the ceremony. UNM’s projected graduating class includes 2,230 bachelor’s degrees, 492 master’s degrees, 67 doctorates, 91 Juris doctorates, 79 medical doctorates, 66 pharmacy doctorates, 71 graduate certificates and 2 education specialists. An official degree count is determined following commencement.

It’s a time for “new beginnings,” a transition from one facet of life to another. A time for celebration, recognition and reflection. On Saturday, May 15 at 9 a.m. at University Stadium, approximately 3,100 students from The University of New Mexico will graduate as part of the institution’s 2021 Spring Commencement, a ceremony that honors all doctoral, master’s, bachelor s and associate s degree candidates from all schools, colleges, and degree-granting programs.
This is UNM’s first in-person commencement ceremony since December 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
