The Michigan Supreme Court ruled against extending the existing November deadline for redrawing voting districts.
The Michigan Independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commission says the U.S. Census data needed to redraw districts has been delayed due to several factors, including the pandemic.
The data is not expected to be released until mid-August, which could set back the redistricting commission’s plans until January.
The Michigan Supreme Court did conclude, however, that the delay of the data is through no fault of the commission.
The redistrictinng commission says they’re thankful to receive a decision from the court, and will do whatever they can do meet the November 21 deadline.
