The man was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at Upstate University Hospital, police said.
Police were called to Mexico Community Park in the village of Mexico around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday to speak with the man, who was believed suicidal and possibly armed, according to Oswego County 911 dispatchers.
The man was in his car in the park threatening to kill himself, said Trooper Jack Keller, a spokesman for the state police.

Mexico, N.Y. A nearly 12-hour standoff between a man and police that caused some Oswego County schools to go into lockdown ended Tuesday when the man shot himself, state police said.
The man is in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital, said Trooper Jack Keller, a New York State police spokesman. The man was initially taken to Oswego Hospital, he said.
