Mexican President claims he has proof of Chinese fentanyl smuggling

The president of Mexico claims that his nation has evidence of illegal shipments of the powerful opioid fentanyl coming from China. According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a shipment containing the drug was detained in the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas, reported the BBC. He said, "We already have proof," and said he will seek the Chinese government to assist in preventing the shipments. According to US authorities, fentanyl is currently the primary cause of drug overdose deaths in the US.

Mexico shootout: Seven die after gunmen ambush soldiers

Gunmen ambushed a military unit in southwest Mexico on Friday (March 17), killing two soldiers and at least five suspected criminals, according to police. The shootout caused further casualties.  The altercation happened on Friday afternoon in the town of El Pescado, which is located in the state of Guerrero's mountainous region and is a frequent site of clashes between criminal groups. A military unit "was the target of an attack by approximately 18 armed civilians aboard two vehicles," after which a shootout broke out, according to an army report, as per AFP.

The chief of the Mexican space agency has sought the support of India in building and launching a remote sensing satellite. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will work on this proposal with the support of India's External Affairs Ministry.

Mexico intercepts buses carrying around 180 migrants

On Monday (5 September), in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, authorities found two buses carrying close to 180 migrants, including a child, from Central America and Cuba. At a checkpoint on a highway in the eastern part of Veracruz, Mexican police reportedly detained three people, arrested one vehicle, two buses, and seized one firearm, according to the National Guard.

Two children among 8 killed in Mexico gun attack

Two children were among 8 killed during a gun attack in the central Mexico region which is rife with turf wars between drug cartels. According to officials, two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at homes in the Silao municipality of Guanajuato state late Tuesday. The assailants were reportedly targeting four men who were at one home, killing them and a woman, the authorities said.
