THE EDITOR, Madam: The current global hunger figures are alarming. More than 828 million people worldwide wake up every day without food, and the outlook for the future is not encouraging. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates.
at a time when the u.s., mexican, you know, law enforcement cooperation is at one of its lowest levels in decades. this is a real problem. i think the mexicans are going to be transparent here. on the bigger picture issue is what do we do about a failed state in essence on our southern border, and there s no real hope for the future because, again, the u.s./mexican cooperation is almost nonexistent right now. that s not a political problem. that s a national security problem for the united states. ellison, these people are all from lake city, south carolina, where you are, and we re hearing from people who know them. what have we heard so far from their loved ones? reporter: yeah, we re actually expecting to see the community gather for a vigil later this evening. all of them had ties to lake city. this has been described as their hometown. some had moved to different parts of the state to north carolina, but this, friends and family say this is where all four of the victims were a
mexico could easily say to the united states you re stuck with these populations. but prior to the summit, the mexicans agreed to take 30,000 back from certain countries. that was significant. but i really think it s important, and the administration understands this, to recognize that mexico has really leaned forward in terms of taking a wide array look, title 42 would not be possible without mexican cooperation. now does the administration want mexico to do more, to take more individuals back and do more to secure the southern border and stop the flow of people, absolutely. they re in a difficult spot because, you know, mexico has done an extraordinary job thus far, and look, i m sure the administration is going to push for more assistance. at the same time, i think it s important that they recognize how much mexico has already done. and jackie, i m reading the tea leaves here. when you look at the delegations that went with president biden yesterday, no republicans among them. y
essentially stacking them up with the cooperation of the mexican government, hopefully having safe conditions and humane conditions doesn t strike me as something that s gonna lead to a very successful challenge from the anti-government. dana: especially if we have this country agreement with canada. right. a lot of this will come down to mexican cooperation. so far the mexican president has announced they will do this. they re working with the u.s. government. so although mexico certainly has its pockets of despair and violence, if they can do a decent job keeping people safe while these claims are processed, it seems like a fairly constitutional system. dana: there s one other issue we should talk about, the issue of the definition of persecution. when you are an asylum seeker, if you can prove that you would be persecuted, is it by your government? that s how you hope to get an asylum claim approved in the united states? stphart originally that was the case.
finish teti inviolabilii finiinitiative going to continu? well, i think he certainly will want some form of extension of what was called the merida initiative and will get a new name now. not so much in terms of money. the money involved was never very much given the size of the mexican economy. it was more a symbol of greater u.s./m u.s./mexican cooperation and i m sure pena nieto wants that to continue and to even improve. i think he will also ask president obama, though, that the u.s./mexican relationship should not just be restricted to drugs and security. that there are other very important issues whether those are economic ties, et cetera, or immigration reform which becomes more likely or less unlikely than before the election. so i think the main point pena nieto will try to get across to president obama will be no more just drugs. let s talk about other things, too, and perhaps not only no
