Coimbatore: Motorists who were found venturing out of their house unnecessarily near Eru Company Junction on Mettupalayam Road were subjected to RT-PC.
Coimbatore: Police have tightened grip on the people venturing out onto the streets unnecessarily to enforce the total lockdown strictly and curb the spike in Covid-19 cases at a time when patients are struggling to find beds in hospitals and dying without oxygen support.
On Friday, both the city and rural police had intensified the vehicle check and fined the violators, as a deterrent.
According to a police source, more than 5,700 cases - 3,200 in the city limits and 2,500 in the rural limits - were registered on the day for violating the motor vehicles act and Covid-19 guidelines, especially face mask etiquette and social distancing.
Coimbatore: Motorists using Themaiyan Street at Kavundamapalayam in the city are put to undue inconvenience after the sudden rainfall on Tuesday.
As flyover construction work is being carried out on Mettupalayam Road, traffic was diverted through Themaiyan Street for the past three years. Since the diversion came into effect, the number of motorists using the road has increased but not the quality of the road.
Following the rainfall on Tuesday, the mud road is filled with sludge and stagnant water.
Krishnamanikandan Subramanian, a shopkeeper on the street, said, “The road belongs to the postal department. It is yet to be handed over to the city corporation. The 300m-long road was opened up for public use only three years ago.”

In a bid to ease traffic congestion in the city, clean and rejuvenate the Sanganoor Canal, the Coimbatore Corporation has floated tender to build a road along the water body.
Sources in the civic body said the tender was for developing that stretch of the canal between the Mettupalayam Road and Avinashi Road, which would be the first phase.
The project cost for the first phase was around ₹40 crore, which the civic body had sought from the Directorate of Town and Country Planning under the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund.
Coimbatore: The city corporation sealed the old and new flower markets on Mettupalayam Road on Monday.
Flower vendors are expected to function from Shastri Maidan on Arokiasamy Road at RS Puram from Tuesday. “As many as 135 stage shops and 28 stall shops were functioning in the flower markets. The civic body decided to close the markets as it was difficult to control the crowd. Subsequently, entry to both the markets were sealed with metal sheets on Monday,” a statement from the corporation said.
Earlier that day, flower vendors approached corporation officials and requested them to allow them continue business from the markets. They promised to follow Covid-19 guidelines.
