cnn meteorologist alexandra steele joins us now. so how cold is it for those people trying to find some way to stay warm without power? well, the electric company there says for the most part, we should have the power up by tomorrow or beginning of next week. you can imagine. look at marquette. this is areas of michigan. four degrees, that will be the high temperature. 20 degrees below average. detroit will only be in the 20s by monday. it s cold now, but even getting colder, as this kind of cold arctic air mass drops out. really freezes these guys out. some incredibly cold air on the docket and we re going to see it drop another 20 degrees. we ve got an area of low pressure in the south that is going to be a rainy day. atlanta from louisiana, mississippi, georgia. places in georgia have had one of their wettest years thus far on record. today, maybe 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches unsaturated ground.
major snow and ice storms. meteorologist alexandra steele has look at the forecast. alexandra? who doesn t dream of a white christmas, right? no dreaming here. this is the reality. now meteorologically a white christmas is defined as having an inch of snow on the ground christmas morning. where we re going to see it here along the northern tier of the country where we have snow and temperatures have sustained their cold factor. idaho, tampa, wyoming, dakotas, michigan, wisconsin, and then moving east. so that s where we will. and let me show you where we won t, and a lot of that is contingent on the temperature. bismarck, you will have it. snow on the ground and temperatures will stay below freezing. minneapolis, you ll have it too, you lucky kids. 22, snow on the ground, staying well below freezing. denver, you won t be. look at temperatures. 46 on christmas. chicago, a white christmas for you. kansas city, not so.
winter doesn t officially begin until next saturday, but you wouldn t know it by the weather the past few days. snow, more than a foot in some places, from missouri to new england. the storm stretching 1,000 miles at one point. but let s look a bit ahead with meteorologist alexandra steele. alexandra, last winter was a pretty mild one. what are we looking at for this one? for this winter, rosa, meteorlogical winterer is january, february. let s show what you happened this far. so far in december, temperatures in northern plains and upper midwest, well below average. northeast, mid plantatlantic as. how do we have precip? we ve had above average snow here and as well here in the southeast. above normal precip. and temperatures here have been below normal as well. so that s where we ve been so far this december. now, looking out for the next
