Novel coronavirus cases have been rising in Summit County and with the increase in cases, the county’s transmission risk was increased from low to medium on May 12 – the only part of the state with the designation as of Thursday morning.
Although confirmed cases in the county have continued to exceed the single-day record prior to the current surge, 79, set in January 2021, a look at the recent overall data indicates Summit County may have reached the peak of the omicron wave.
Utah had a record-breaking number of new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, then topped that record on Thursday with 8,913 cases and 530 hospitalizations. There were 13 new deaths, which included a child.
Critics have questioned the process that led Utah officials to pay millions of dollars for a vaccination scheduling platform that several of the state’s local health departments, including Summit County’s, have not utilized.
