The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the Taliban of “deliberately” targeting journalists and other media workers, including women
in Afghanistan.
The watchdog said in a statement that threats and attacks against journalists have increased sharply since the start of the negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
According to the statement, such attacks have increased “concerns about preserving freedom of expression and the media in any peace settlement.”
The Watchdog has found that the Taliban commanders and fighters have engaged in a pattern of threats, intimidation, and violence against members of the media in areas where the Taliban have significant influence, as well as in Kabul.

Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) members on Tuesday called on US President-elect Joe Biden to reconsider US policies on Afghanistan that were mostly instituted during outgoing President Donald Trump’s tenure.
Biden is expected to be sworn into office on Wednesday and is expected to overturn some of Trump’s policies. However, his stance on the war in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of American troops is not yet clear.
“The US should respect and consider human values in their policies regarding Afghanistan. The US should implement the deal that was signed with Afghanistan.
“The New US government should work for peace in Afghanistan, because the US-Taliban deal has been violated and needs reconsideration,” said Anarkali Honaryar, another senator.

National Security Directorate (NDS) and the Attorney General’s Office confirmed Monday that three senior senators, from the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament), were arrested in Balkh province and have been charged with accepting bribes.
In a joint statement issued by the NDS and AGO, the security organizations said the senators have been accused of accepting $40,000 in bribes and have been transferred to Kabul.
Addressing a press conference earlier Monday in Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh Governor Mohammad Farhad Azimi said the three senators had been sent to the province to inspect revenue offices but that based on intelligence gathered the delegation had been arrested.

A member of the Afghanistan Republic’s negotiating team told members of the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) that the current war in the country is Haram and that insurgents have been killing people every day in the name of Jihad.
Peace negotiator Attaullah Lodin said that the killing of Afghans is not Jihad and that the Taliban were not able to convince the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that their war was legitimate.
“War has been ongoing under Jihad. Dozens of Afghans are killed every day; is the killing of Afghans Jihad? The current war is Haram; the Taliban failed to convince the Organization of Islamic [Cooperation] countries,” said Lodin.
