Kanye West were among the early Grammy winners on Sunday (14Mar21), as they picked up honours at the virtual Premiere Ceremony.
Beyonce and Blue Ivy claimed the Best Music Video prize for Brown-Skinned Girl while Kanye landed the Best Contemporary Christian Music Album award for Jesus Is King .
Beck was among the group that claimed the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for Hyperspace, Billie Eilish and her brother
After her third win at Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song on Sunday, she tied with Alison Krauss for the most gongs for a singer or female artist, but her award for Best R&B Performance put her one better.
Hitmaker Jimmy Jam made the announcement as he presented the award to Beyonce, stating, “History has just been made. Breaking the all-time record for the most Grammy wins ever by any female artist or any singer, male or female, the Grammy goes to Beyonce.”
The stunned star took the mic at the Grammy and said, “As an artist, I believe it’s my job – and all of our jobs- to reflect the times. It’s been such a difficult time, so I wanted to uplift, encourage and celebrate all of the beautiful black queens and kings that continue to inspire me and inspire the whole world.
When music s biggest night airs during a pandemic, does it still make a sound? If its awards brethren are any indicator, the answer is… sort of. The CMAs, Emmys, and Golden Globes which have trotted out modified versions of their telecasts since you-know-what began last March all saw drop-offs in ratings. Then again, that downward slope pre-dates COVID-19. And having fewer eyeballs shouldn t excuse the boring pitfalls the Grammys have consistently fallen into. If the show which has also lost viewers over the years, likely due to a combination of A-list music stars boycotting and the perception that the Recording Academy is out of touch hopes to stay relevant, it needs to at least learn from other virtual ceremonies: Double down on shots of stars hanging at home, skip the shoddy production that reminds us of work Zoom calls, and lean heavily on new music, preferably performed l
