Parents, Teachers Against School Voucher Bill Going To AZ Capitol

Raquel Mamani Teachers and parents are holding weekly motor marches around the Capitol to protest against bills that they say threaten educators and students. Parents and educators will be at the Arizona Legislature on Wednesday morning to hand out donuts to lawmakers before they testify against against a bill that would expand the state’s school voucher program that will be heard in the House Ways and Means committee.  The pandemic has limited the interaction between state lawmakers and the public. Parents like Rachael Clawson have called and emailed their legislators to voice their opposition to SB 1452, which would make nearly three-quarters of Arizona students eligible for vouchers, but they feel like those tactics haven’t worked. 

MPS salutes two retiring long-time board members

Mesa Public School officials last week bid a fond farewell to two Governing Board members who each have devoted 12 years to the nonpaying position. Board President Elaine Miner and Steven Peterson are retiring and will be replaced in January by Lara Salmon Ellingson and Joe O’Reilly, winners in last month’s election along with incumbent Kiana Maria Sears. A video featuring several community leaders thanking Miner and Peterson accompanied individual tributes by Superintendent Dr. Andi Fourlis, several other administrators, Sears and board members Jenny Richardson and Marcie Hutchinson. Miner served on the board 1999-2007 and then returned in 2017 while Richardson has served three consecutive terms.
