Business owners seethe over third nationwide lockdown, demand compensation

(Hadas Parush/Flash90) Forced into a weekslong shutdown for the third time since the start of the pandemic, business owners on Thursday protested the nationwide lockdown set to come into force on Sunday to stem virus infections. The government regulations, which permit the partial opening of some school grades, also drew criticism from parents and local authorities, who called for the swift vaccination of teachers. “It feels like this lockdown is unnecessary,” Shani Nuri Mamalia, a cosmetician from the central town of Kfar Saba, told the Ynet news site. “It’s confusing and frustrating to all industries. This is a war of attrition against us.”

After rebuke, ministers say kindergartens, schools to stay open after 1 p m

(Gershon Elinson/Flash90) Cabinet ministers on Thursday scrapped plans to shutter kindergartens and schools at 1 p.m. each day of the upcoming national lockdown, and will allow them to operate normally. Kindergartens, grades 1-4 and 11-12 will study as usual during the lockdown, while grades 5-10 will study remotely. The government had been maligned since announcing that in-person classes would end earlier than usual during the lockdown, with angry parents saying this wouldn’t allow them to work sufficient hours. Criticism of the plan grew after reports said there was no epidemiological justification for the restriction. Rather, it was made merely to “create a sense of lockdown” among the general public, rather than business as usual.
