Richard Currie was elected the new colonel of the Accompong Maroons in St Elizabeth on Thursday. The 43-year-old, who is reportedly the youngest person to become colonel, polled 681 votes to attain victory over his closest rival, the incumbent Ferron Williams who amassed 400 votes. The other competitors in the race for colonel received double-digit votes. They were: former colonel Meridie Rowe with 98 votes; Sheldon Wallace who attained 30 votes; and Robert Cawley with 28 votes.  Currie is to be installed in the leadership position within the next 10 days. He led a campaign on a number of initiatives that focused mainly on bringing change to the Accompong Maroons, including infrastructure development and economic independence.
