Backed by both housing and environmental advocates, the Brunswick Town Council Monday approved a nearly $4 million land purchase that could affect the town's landscape for decades to come.
After extending a development moratorium designed to protect Brunswick's fragile coastal ecosystem, the Town Council unveiled plans to purchase 283 acres of land near Maquoit Bay on Monday evening.

A 90-year-old woman was in serious condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland after her van rolled over on Mere Point Road in Brunswick Thursday.
Police officers found the Honda van upside down near 288 Mere Point Road shortly before 2 p.m. Firefighters freed the driver, Eleanore Berry of Brunswick.
Berry was driving south on Mere Point Road and drifted over the center line into the left side ditch and hit a tree, according to police. The vehicle rolled over and stopped in the northbound travel lane. Police believe Berry fell asleep while driving. She was wearing a seat belt.

2/11 at 10:42 a.m. Heather Ingaharro, 36, of Emanuel Drive, was arrested on Pleasant Street by Officer Gregory McCarthy on a warrant.
2/11 at 12:26 p.m. Haley Wormwood, 38, of Maple Street, South Paris, was arrested on Tibbetts Drive by Officer Gregory McCarthy on charges of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and unlawful possession of a Schedule W drug.
