Mercer Island High School’s drill team excelled with a pair of second-place finishes at the recent dance/drill state championships at the Yakima Valley SunDome. On March 23 in the 1A/2A/3A state event, the locals notched second in the 3A military competition (273.00 points) and were runner-up in the 1A/2A/3A kick category (266.90). Individually, freshman driller Bella Liang finished third in the drill down results. This is the drill team’s first runner-up placement in 18 years and its first time snagging runner-up placements in two categories simultaneously. The locals usually compete in military, and they jumped into the kick category for the first time this year. Photo courtesy of the Mercer Island School District
