MENDOTA – Distress calls from a mother duck on the shore of Lake Mendota led to a dramatic rescue of ducklings trapped in the passageways under the spillway. A woman fishing noticed the commotion and contacted authorities. Around 9 PM the Mendota Fire Department arrived with ladders and nets and with the help of bystanders, plucked the baby ducks out of danger. Mother and the ducklings were reunited and paddled away towards a safer portion of the lake.

MENDOTA – A dog and his owner both went through the ice on Lake Mendota Sunday. Around noon the Mendota Fire Department and Mendota Police were called to the south side of the lake for a report of a man and a dog who had both ended up in the water. When authorities arrived, both had made it to shore on their own. According to Mendota Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser the dog had apparently ran out onto the ice to harass the geese when it fell into the water. No injuries were reported.

MENDOTA – Weeks of heavy snow accumulating on a gas station canopy led to its collapse Monday in Mendota. The Mendota Fire Department was called around 2:30 PM to the station near I-39 and US Route 34 after a portion of the structure had fallen onto a truck parked at a gas pump. The driver of the truck, Michelle Blocher of Warsaw, Indiana, was inside the station when she heard what she thought was a crash outside. Mendota Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser said their department used the tower truck to inspect the rest of the canopy over the gas pump and the nearby diesel pumps. No injuries were reported.
