So these works are all very different and have very different background stories. We have the return of the 69th irish regiment. A caricature of lincoln writing the emancipation proclamation. We have a painting of an episode of war and some prison art. First, lets look at the relationship between more and art i harold. Now in the nume realm, particularly the history human, the art, objects, and documents on display have the power to stand in for a larger historical narrative, conveying so much more than what is structurally defining of that object itself. But what about our book, civil war in 50 objects . How did this come about, and how effective is it at conveying the narrative sweep of the civil war in 50 objects . Well, its kind of a tactile history that brings you closer to the lived experience of the civil war. Thats because i was thats what made it so exciting for me. And if youre asking how it happened, it happened because of louise mayer. Louise asked me if i would be doing in this kind of a chronicle for publication, and she said, why dont you come in . Furious fourth World War Ii History group. We are here at army had rich days at the u. S. Army heritage andrea and Education Center here in carlile, pennsylvania. At this event, its a major complex. We are here on the Heritage Army heritage trail. We can find reenacting historians from all different time periods from the 17th century up to the president. My group is here this weekend to discuss the 75th anniversary of the normandy invasion which is taking place this summer. We found it certainly fitting to commemorate that event. Us putting on these uniforms, wearing old equipment, it certainly gives us a better perspective and appreciation of what the greatest generation went through. If we can impart even a small inkling of that to passers by and families who come visit this place, then we feel like weve done a fairly good job. The unit that we portray is the Fourth Infantry Division. Its a unit that is sometimes overshadowed in the realm of World War Ii History. Nonetheless, it was
