Holland Rescue Mission opens warming center during cold snap
HOLLAND The Holland Rescue Mission has opened a warming center and relaxed restrictions on who can stay at its facilities to make sure everyone has access to a safe and warm place to stay during the current cold spell.
The Mission moved to what is called a Code Blue designation for the winter storm last weekend and the current icy temperatures.
During a Code Blue, the shelter opens a drop-in warming center where anyone can stay to get out of the cold without undergoing the usual intake process with the shelter.
HOLLAND — The Holland Rescue Mission said thank you to its longest-serving volunteer, 89-year-old Bill Plumert of Hudsonville, as he retired after 22 years of lending a hand at the shelter."I would have liked to keep going," said Plumert, "but some health concerns and the pandemic put the kibosh on that."Plumert is now busy with full-time care for his wife, Mary.Plumert started volunteering at the Mission in May 1998 after learning that mission director Darryl Bartlett needed volunteers
