can have all the cybersecurity in the world and it s not very good, by the way, we can get into that. but we are not, right now, deterring the russians from engaging in this behavior, which is why you see the intelligence community saying, they re doing it now and they re coming back for the 2018 midterms. and hey, this morning, nbc news is publishing a database of 200,000 tweets that twitter has tied to malicious activity from russian-linked accounts. we re psychologicaling throu i-g through them right now. this is that database. each is an individual tweet and there are 200,000 of them. what can you tell us about this? hats off to our colleagues for prying this information out of people who are familiar with it. because twitter did not put this out, explicitly. but i think what it shows is what we sort of already know. which is that these russian hackers and bots are exploiting divisions in american society. and they re using twitter and other social media platforms to do that. and
tell your doctor if you ve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you ve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don t start humira if you have an infection. be there for you, and them. ask your gastroenterologist about humira. with humira, control is possible. we are now back with disturbing new research that shows russians again interfering in our politics. the research shows this time it was russian bots and trolls fueling release the memo campaign ahead of that controversial republican memo alleging the justice department abused its surveillance powers.
it s going to do long-term institutional damage. i also agree he has been winning the messaging war. they have set that they have set a narrative, you know, for the last week or so. the memo itself that was released last friday was a , but the release the memo campaign was a success. and it continues, and it continues to be a success. every single day they by the way, i ve sort of spent some time in conservative media. and to say that he has succeeded in turning around the conservative media to get them to buy into his attempt to discredit and dee legitimatize the fbi is putting it mildly. now, what long-term effects it will have on the mueller investigation, i don t know. but there s no question about it, when you re seeing numbers like republicans, 70 some percent of republicans losing confidence in the nation s law enforcement institutions, you know, that s an extraordinary moment in our politics and it s
the intelligence sources have always said that. but the second thing going on here is that the president is really trying to put his base on notice with the release the memo campaign that they should be skeptical of anything that comes out of the fbi and the special prosecutor. so you know, did he achieve that goal? potentially, because people aren t going to take the time to read that memo. but the reality is for those that do, they realize the president was really falling on a sword, admitting the investigation is not based on the dossier. and one other quick point here is that he had an unwitting ally, the russian bots, pushing the release the memo meme. so the russians are still at it. unwitting. it might not be so unwitting. and that s the irony of it, to have republican members on the intel committee go out and push this thing, knowing that it s the russians behind it, the ones actually pushing this out into the public. that s why john mccain said
there s not a whole lot of russian impact on the release the memo campaign that s been on soshl media, having to do with these allegations that the fbi used its surveillance authority. quite a bit thing on social media. good, independent reporting that russian patrols have been heavily involved in amplifying this message. and so senator feinstein and representative schiff demanded facebook and twitter look into this carefully and tell the world about what was going on with the russians and they came back with letters that are pretty thin. so they ve gotten new letters because these members of congress are not happy with what they ve heard so far. totally not pleased. jill and kaitlyn, where does this go in washington? congress is clearly, it seems, not going to let up the pressure. and the pressure is important because, remember, the russian meddling is said to be continuing in 2018 and into 2020. that s been the big question mark about, you know, the white house undermining all of
