Published: 31 January 2021   PHILIPSBURG: - “St. Maarten is not Bonaire, it won’t be as easy as you think,” says Independent Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel in reaction to an article published by The Daily Herald last week in which CFT Chairman Raymond Gradus made references to increasing taxes on St. Maarten. In that article, Gradus is quoted as saying: “I think that more taxes should be levied in St. Maarten, and not less. The tax burden is low in St. Maarten, while the expenditure level is rather high. The Dutch government is now providing liquidity support. However, that is not forever. We are calling for an increase in taxes in St. Maarten and a reduction of expenditures.” Gradus also said: “Property tax is an efficient tax which is easy to levy, much more so than taxes on capital.

St Martin News Network - Chris called a hero as Passangrahan monument auction cancelled

Published: 09 December 2020 PHILIPSBURG: -Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel was called our hero on Wednesday by the owners of the Passangrahan Royal Guest House for his public support for the property, a national monument. The auction of the property was scheduled to take place on Thursday but was canceled after owners obtained backing from a financial guarantee bond for up to $8mln from Stockton Fuller & Company to see the landmark renovation through its next three years. Emmanuel came out to the defense of the national monument by raising awareness and stating it would be a crying shame if it is allowed to be auctioned. He was very happy to learn that the monument was saved.
