2021 has reached an end, so perhaps it is time for reflection on a year in Estonia which has seen changes in national and local government, not to mention a new head of state. The highs of sporting success in the olympics, in tennis, swimming and athletics, all vied for our attention, as did the highs, but not in a good way, of soaring energy prices near year-end, and spikes in coronavirus rates in spring and autumn.
Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) chief Elmar Vaher said that the police did not overreact in closing MEM Cafe last week for coronavirus restriction non-compliance, because the state had to establish itself against a company, which deliberately disregarded the rules.
Several police officers were threatened and insulted during the protests, which took place on Tuesday after the Health Board ordered a Tallinn cafe to be closed. The Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) contacted six people, but did not identify a direct threat.
