A homeless man was charged Sunday with sexually assaulting a young clerk whom he held captive for hours after abducting her from a convenience store in Athens.
The woman’s life was threatened several times by the suspect, who forced her to call for a Lyft ride to the Howard Johnson motel on Atlanta Highway, where he intended to sexually assault the 19-year-old woman again, according to Athens-Clarke police.
The suspect, Melvin Scott Allison, 51, whose last known address was in Jackson County, faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated sodomy, battery, sexual battery and false imprisonment.
Allison, apprehended while trying to hide under garbage bags inside a trash bin at the motel, remained in the Athens-Clarke County Jail without bond Monday.
