Imprisoned by the state for a quarter century for murders they did not commit, two brothers from Pontiac are now free men. Their exonerations have come after a lengthy fight to prove their innocence in a brutal murder.
LANSING, Mich. — Two Michigan brothers who were wrongfully convicted in the murder of a family friend walked free Tuesday and were reunited with their family after 25 years behind bars. George and Melvin DeJesus were convicted in the 1995 killing of Margaret Midkiff. Oakland County Circuit Judge Martha Anderson
"I wish to apologize for the actions taken by your fellow citizens against you," the judge said. "Twenty-five years of your life has been taken from you."
A man who admitted to sexually assaulting the victim said the brothers forced him to do it and then they killed the woman. 20 years later, he was convicted of another rape and murder of a woman - and it took 5 more years for the brothers to be freed.
