It was a battle for first place when the Stony Brook softball team hosted UMass Lowell at University Field on Wednesday, April 28 for what could have been a standings-altering doubleheader. However, the Seawolves made the most of their opportunity, extending their hold on first place in the America East from two games to four by sweeping the series in thrilling fashion.
UMass Lowell had the chance to even itself up with Stony Brook in the standings, as a sweep for them would have made both teams 7-3 in conference play.
Playing their most important series to date, the Seawolves turned to senior pitcher Dawn Bodrug for game one. Bodrug was coming off of an untouchable weekend performance in Maine, where she pitched complete-game shutouts on both Saturday and Sunday, striking out 22 batters in the process. She entered with a 23.1 innings scoreless streak. That was snapped immediately.

Coming in unbeaten in conference play, the Stony Brook softball team looked to continue its streak this past weekend as the Seawolves traveled north to Orono, Maine to take on the Maine Black Bears in a three-game series. While Stony Brook took its first conference loss, the team still won the series due to dominant pitching.
Game one on Saturday was a battle of the aces, as the Seawolves’ best pitcher, senior Dawn Bodrug, would go face-to-face with Black Bears’ star pitcher, senior Kyleigh O’Donnell. The pitching lived up to its hype, as the bats were quiet until late.

Graduate pitcher Melissa Rahrich is not one to be outdone.
Rahrich tossed the Stony Brook softball team’s second straight one-hit shutout in a 2-0 home victory over the St. John’s Red Storm on April 20, following senior Dawn Bodrug’s one-hit shutout last Wednesday. “That was one of Mel’s best games of the year,” head coach Megan T. Bryant said in a press release. “She had really good command. She was mixing her pitches well and had great composure out there in the circle.”
Rahrich was dominant from the start, needing only four pitches to retire the first three batters on groundouts. She was nearly perfect the rest of the way, allowing a second-inning triple and hitting shortstop Kaitlyn Lologo with a pitch in the fourth for her only other baserunner of the game. She produced six strikeouts, needing just three pitches on four of them.
