Red Cross in desperate need of donors: The need for blood is constant

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) ABC7 and the American Red Cross are partnering to urge Bay Area residents to donate blood in January for National Blood Donor Month. The need for blood is constant, said Justin Mueller, regional executive of donor services for the American Red Cross Northern California coastal region. That s the same that we always had pre-COVID. It holds very true today.
According to Mueller, about 25 percent of Red Cross blood drives were at colleges and high schools prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Distance learning ended that opportunity.
Local families may have set their own limitations on traveling and visitors during this holiday season amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but sometimes the simple task of just arriving at home is the best gift of all.
For well over six months, Parker Mayorgas, 13, was on the upper end of the heart transplant list waiting for a donor heart to arrive. His mother, Melissa Mayorgas, remained optimistic that one would come before his initial heart finally failed. During that time his best friend, St. Maryâs County resident Finley Costello, competed in numerous virtual 5K and 10K events to raise money for her ailing running partner.
