Family doctors are closing their books to new patients in Christchurch and other cities as they struggle to recruit staff from overseas and meet growing demand. The Royal New Zealand College of GPs (RNZCGP) will discuss its concerns about the GP shortage with Minister of Health Andrew Little on Friday, about three months after first requesting a meeting. “It’s very rapidly reaching a crisis point in terms of the number of GPs indicating they are preparing to leave or cut back on what they are doing,” RNZCGP medical director Bryan Betty said.
