john berman is off. hurricane ian now churning in the caribbean with 75 mile an hour winds. the storm s path is uncertain and that has all of florida preparing for a major hurricane. people are waiting in long lines outside of stores. they are looking to stock up on supplies while they can. essential items like bottled water flying off store shelves. residents are prepping homes and business bes for the heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge expected to come their way. ron desantis already declaring an emergency for the entire state activate ing the national guard and a hurricane watch has been issued along the west coast of florida including the tampa bay area. carlos swau resident is watching preparations. we have chad myers standing by in atlanta. let s start with carlos who are is live for us near a sandbag distribution center. tell us about some of these preparations. reporter: good morning the storm preparations are well underway. schools have been closed through
good morning to viewers here in the u.s. and around the world, it is tuesday, september 6th and i m brianna keilar with john berman. in california, this morning, the state is bracing for rolling power outages as a brutal heat wave is expected to shatter the record for power demand. temperature in parts of the state hitting 115 degrees with no end in sight. not ideal conditions, obviously, for fighting wildfires. evacuations are now under way in riverside county where the fairview fire has killed two people and scorched 2,000 acres. yeah. in the northeast, though, a much different threat. flood watches are now in effect for more than 50 million people across 11 states. virginia to maine. some areas could see 7 inches of rain by this afternoon which is not good news for people in providence, rhode island. where heavy rains and flash floods closed i-95 in both directions yesterday afternoon. we re going to have much more on this ahead. this morning, officials in memphis are
parents and children. three months after an 18-year-old killer gunned down two teachers at robb elementary school. no teachers or staff are returning to robb this more than. they re absorbed in other schools. at least 15 schools showing support by wearing uvalde s maroon colors. beefed up protection at several uvalde schools including fences and comfort dogs on hand and parents on hand as well. some say the district says has not been enough. cnn s shimon prokupecz is live. for now, shimon, parents and kids will take that walk or drive to school for the first time. reporter: and as you guys point out, certainly a different kind of anxiety and anticipation for the first day of school here in at uvalde. school delayed here for several weeks as the school district work to implement new security measures. you can see this fence behind me. this was not here from the massacre at robb elementary. it s something new that the school put in place to give a feeling of safety to the
still without power. the extent of the death and destruction may just be coming to light. governor ron desantis is defending officials in lee county where more than half the storm related deaths have been announced. they re facing criticism for issuing evacuation orders a day later than neighboring counties. here s what governor ron desantis told cnn. is that what you ll be reviewing, looking at the evacuation orders even lee county if they had followed their own evaluation orders from what we reviewed they should have had the evacuation order sooner. the issue is they informed people and most people did not want to do it. that s just the reality. you re in a situation, are you going to grab somebody out of their home that doesn t want to. i don t think that s the appropriate use of government. i think that takes it a little too far. reporter: boris sanchez joins us live from fort myers this morning to tell us what they re dealing with there. boris, what s the latest?
