Rod Franz resigns as Salina City Commissioner effective immediately

Rod Franz has resigned from his position as Salina City Commissioner, according to a letter from his family sent to Mayor Melissa Hodges. A letter submitted on Wednesday said this decision comes after he suffered a fall on April 6. The letter listed Chris Franz, Brian Franz and Gayle Martin as his powers of attorney.   This move will allow Rod, his family, and partner to concentrate on his recovery, the letter said. Rod Franz, who was elected to the commission in November 2019, was the finance director for the city from 1996 until his retirement in 2016. Rod s entire career and retirement years are devoted to public service and doing what is best for his community, the letter said. We thank you, his fellow city commissioners, city staff and advisory board members for their past and future professionalism and assistance in emulating his devotion and leadership.

Salina voted to keep its mask mandate, businesses threaten lawsuits

At this week s city commission meeting, several members of the public indicated they would be filing lawsuits against the City of Salina in response to the continuation of a face mask mandate in the city. A Kansas Senate bill allows a channel for citizens to seek recourse if they ve been damaged by the mandates. Salina faced its first of these suits last week. It was dismissed, noting that a Kansas city has  home rule authority, or final say in how to interpret a state mandate. Mayor Melissa Hodges said she understands that each individual that plans to file a suit has a different set of circumstances.

City of Salina mask mandate stays in place after split 2-2 vote

After a 2-2 vote, the mask mandate for the City of Salina will continue. As it was a topic that concerned many of the citizens who attended the Salina City Commission meeting Monday, the discussion on the mandate was moved up to the first action item of the agenda. The commission heard an update about COVID-19, including infection rates and vaccination rates, from Saline County Health Officer and Health Department Director Jason Tiller. Several people in attendance at the City-County Building and at the meeting online voiced their opposition to continuing the mandate while others attending online asked the commission to continue with the mandate.
