Six athletes have qualified to represent the East Carolina University track and field team at the National Collegiate Athletic Association East Preliminary held at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, from May 27 through May 29.
Senior thrower Ryan Davis, junior pole vaulter Sommer Knight, junior jumper Brooke Sith, freshman jumper Niejel Wilkins, freshman sprinter Melicia Mouzzon and senior sprinter Shellbi Chapman all qualified to participate in the prelims.
According to ECU Pirates, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft gave his athletes high praise and credited their work ethic prior to the big competition. To be included in this meet is a high honor, taking an extreme amount of work and dedication,â Kraft said. âThese individuals are very deserving to be competing at this meet to try and get to Oregon. The East Carolina Pirates track and field team will compete at the Darius Dixon invitational from Feb. 12 through Feb. 13 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, with limited participation from both male and female players due to COVID-19.
Last seasonâs Darius Dixon Invitational was described as âanother successful weekend,â by Curt Kraft, director of ECUâs track and field and cross country teams, according to ECUPirates.com. We had another great meet to close out the regular season competition schedule,â Kraft said last season. âNow, we have to turn our attention to the indoor conference championships. Going four weekends in a row has been very tough on the kids bodies. We have to rest up over the next couple weeks both physically and mentally. Both teams feel really good about going into the meet with rest.
