Victory greats and the number eight

Some of Melbourne Victory's best have worn the number eight set to be donned by Josh Brillante during the 2021/22 Isuzu UTE A-League season. Brillante was a key signing for Victory ahead of the upcoming campaign, in a huge boost to the Club's midfield stocks. The 28-year-old will wear the eight shirt, and we take a look at some of the best players to don that number for Victory.

Ikonomidis highlights Victory attacking firepower

The signing of Chris Ikonomidis was an off-season highlight for Melbourne Victory. The talented 26-year-old forward signed a three-year deal with Victory in July in a huge boost to the Club's offensive stocks. A 15-time Socceroo, Ikonomidis missed most of last season with Perth Glory due to a knee injury, but quickly found his feet on his return. Ikonomidis, who spent time with Serie A giants Atalanta and Lazio as a teenager, scored four goals in six games at the end of last season.

Brillante key to Victory midfield revival

Josh Brillante's arrival headlines the major change to Melbourne Victory's midfield heading into the 2021/22 Isuzu Ute A-League season. An area of the park Victory had trouble in at times during the previous campaign, Brillante – who has played 167 A-League Men games – adds some much-needed steel and class to the Club's midfield stocks. Brillante returns to Australia after a spell overseas, having played at Xanthi under now-Victory Head Coach Tony Popovic.

New-look Victory defence ready to impress

It has been a recruiting focus in the off-season, and Melbourne Victory's defence is new-look ahead of 2021/22. Of Victory's 11 signings so far, six have been defenders and another, goalkeeper Ivan Kelava, is sure to play a key role. Victory only kept two Isuzu Ute A-League Men clean sheets last season, a record the Club will be eager to improve ahead of the upcoming campaign. Tony Popovic has bolstered his defensive options with some familiar faces, to both Victory fans and the Head Coach.
