Melbourne Deputy Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece says Australia is moving away from the global consensus on climate change as even China has a “more ambitious” long-term policy on decarbonisation.
China is among the many countries across the world who have adopted net zero emissions targets, with Beijing committing to the goal by 2060.
Scott Morrison has come under fire from critics for not being asked to speak at a virtual climate summit as he and his government has yet to adopt a net zero emissions target.
Mr Reece told Sky News Australia “needs to decarbonise” its economy.
