Success: What is it and does a high IQ help?
There is a perception that intelligence, as measured by an Intelligence Quotient test will lead to success and ultimately, happiness. However, for decades scholars, educators and scientists have debated the validity of these tests. The human brain possesses neuroplasticity which allows for tremendous change and the rapid formation of neural pathways, which facilitate learning. As people age, neuroplasticity wains and pathways are pruned. If a skill is no longer practised, it is lost. IQ fluctuates over time. A child prodigy may not be a genius (according to test criteria) at middle age. Some would say that the Emotional Quotient is a much more important indicator of success. The ability to connect with people, empathise and show compassion can have a tremendous impact on an individual’s life. Judge Hlophe suspension delayed by Judicial Service Commission failures
Over a decade after legal proceedings against Judge John Hlophe began, Hlophe is still actively participating in the South African Judicial system, at the highest level. A finding of gross misconduct has been presented by the Judicial Conduct Tribunal which could lead to Hlophe’s removal. The process which would facilitate his removal could move slowly if past legal proceedings are anything to go by. Freedom Under Law, along with other representative bodies like Accountability Now are calling for Hlophe’s immediate suspension on the grounds of legal findings against him. The Judicial Service Commission previously argued that because the charges were still being reviewed by the Judicial Conduct Tribunal ( in 2016) Judge Hlophe should be allowed to continue his duties as Judge President of the Western Cape High Court. Mailbox: Censorship denies the right to make informed choices
Claudia Dalebout has written to BizNews sharing her concerns about the effect of censorship of information and findings which diverge from views of authorities. YouTube has recently come under fire for using its misinformation policies to remove videos from the powerful platform. BizNews had a brush with YouTube’s censorship rules when a video was removed. It conveyed the views of Nick Hudson from PANDA, an organisation that has alternate views on the need for lockdowns and the scale of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa.
