On May 1, though, her answer changed with the debut of the new At The Market. There s finally a farmers market back at Farmers Market, Barnwell said, laughing, her voice tinged with a mix of excitement and relief. This has been a long time coming.
Three years and eight months, to be exact.
When Hurricane Irma tore through in September 2017, it took the state farmers market space on Edison Avenue with it. The open-air stalls housed the city s original farmers market for decades. Before farmers markets became hotbeds for food trucks, herbal teas and yoga mats, this was a place where honest-to-goodness farmers from points inland would congregate to sell collard greens, cabbage, citrus and tomatoes.
