Rare World, Shipwreck Coins Set Record Sedwick Auction

Rare World, Shipwreck Coins Set Record Sedwick Auction Treasure Auction 29. This is a new record for the auction firm and an indicator of a robust market for collectible coins and currency. The top-selling coin in the sale was the single finest Mexico City-struck cob 8 reales Royal dated 1730 that realized $102,000 USD on a pre-sale estimate of $35,000 and up. A numismatic rarity, the coin has an overdate 1730/28/5 plus the king’s name and ordinal reworked with PHILIPPVS V over LVDOVICS I. It was graded AU 58 by NGC, which is rare among all Spanish colonial Royals as almost all known examples were holed and some even gilded shortly after minting.

Hill prioritizes education, support through memorial

Retired Tech Sgt. Larry Dreamis Hill of Cecilia often can be found at the replica Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall at Elizabethtown Nature Park, donning a long, gray beard and hat that reads “Vietnam Veteran.” For Hill, both the beard and the hat are hard-earned. When Hill served in Vietnam in 1968, he was not allowed to grow facial hair. And when he returned home from the war, he found that even members of American Legion halls were not receptive to Vietnam veterans. Now that he is retired from the military and has helped establish a large-scale memorial for his fallen military brothers and sisters, he has no intention of shaving his face or hiding his veteran insignia. In fact, Hill said his vocal support for military veterans is a way of demonstrating his First Amendment rights, which is one of the chief principles he sought to defend by joining the military initially.

Sebastian and his dad, Bobby, heading out to dive (Photo: Courtesy Elizabeth Morris) The allure of treasure hunting is a Florida staple. Chuck Meide, a maritime archaeologist and director of the archeological program for the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, estimates that there are roughly 5,000 shipwrecks in coastal waters around the state, a legacy that dates back to July 31, 1715. That’s when a hurricane slammed the central coast near Sebastian Inlet, sinking 11 Spanish ships that were passing through on their way back from Havana. The disaster claimed the lives of more than a thousand people and left millions of pesos of gold and jewels scattered undersea, some of which were found by treasure hunter Kip Wagner and his team in the 1960s.
