Moroccan miners continue underground sit-in over working conditions

ABOUT 100 striking Moroccan miners are continuing an underground occupation in a dispute over safety and working conditions, more than a week after beginning the action, their union said today. The strike at the Jebel Aouam mine, near M’rirt in Khenifra province, has been joined by another 200 workers who are protesting above ground. The miners are angry over management reneging on a deal with the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT), which was signed in the presence of a official from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and the Environment in 2019. Workers kept their side of the bargain, hitting productivity targets at the mine, which produces gold, silver and lead. But bosses failed to honour pledges to improve living and working conditions and implement health-and-safety protections.

Moroccan miners hold underground sit-in

Jebel Aouam mine The workers are striking and occupying the mine because the management of Compagnie Minière de Touissit (CMT) failed to implement an agreement signed with IndustriALL affiliate l’Union Marocaine du travail (UMT) in 2019. The agreement, signed in the presence of a representative of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Environment and of the local authority, guaranteed improved living conditions, better working conditions inside the mine, and the provision of occupational health and safety measures. Workers agreed a productivity target at the mine, which produces silver, gold, lead and zinc. The workers met the productivity target, but management failed to honour its side of the agreement. After continued failure by management to meet its obligations, and failure by the Ministry and local authorities to intervene, the UMT members were forced to take the desperate action of going on strike and staging an underground sit-in.

December 16 2020 / Modified on March 23 2021 Suez Maroc, the subsidiary of the French group Suez, has just operationalized its Evalix™ process at the Waste Disposal and Recovery Centre of the city of Meknes. This process improves the elimination of leachates by drying. Suez’s new process is designed to limit environmental degradation by draining the leachate, a highly concentrated liquid fraction from the waste. Evalix™ is now operational at the Meknes Waste Disposal and Recovery Centre.
