As engineers hunt for answers in the Surfside building collapse, signs point to the building s lower reaches By: CNN
By Curt Devine, CNN (CNN) Amid a rescue mission now in its fifth day, engineers and government officials are trying to determine how a Surfside, Florida, condominium tower crashed to the ground, seemingly without warning.
There are no clear answers yet, but early signs point to some failure in the lower reaches of the 13-story building, perhaps in its foundation, columns or underground parking garage.
Forensic engineers will need to examine the ground-floor columns in their investigation, said Sinisa Kolar, a Miami-based engineering executive.

As first responders frantically search the rubble for survivors of a
collapsed residential tower in Surfside, Fla., the investigation has already begun and it is likely to focus on multiple causes, says
Mehrdad Sasani, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northeastern. An engineering report conducted on the building in 2018 and released Friday pinpointed structural damage issues that could have contributed to the catastrophic collapse.

Other clues have emerged as well about Champlain Towers South, says Sasani. “Usually, when there is a collapse, there are several factors involved,” said Sasani, who has researched the progressive collapse of structures, earthquake engineering, and structural integrity and reliability.

The focus in the deadly collapse of a condominium tower in South Florida shifted to the structural integrity of the building as an 11th fatality was reported Monday.
The collapse of the 40-year-old, 12-story Champlain Towers South in Surfside an Atlantic Ocean coastal town of 5,700 about 15 miles north of Miami happened around 1:30 am Thursday.
More than 150 people believed to be in the building at the time are missing.
