Zambia : ZABS certifies Meheba rice

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has awarded a certificate of conformity to Kalota agricultural cooperative of Meheba refugee camp for rice production in the Kalumbila district of Northwestern province. ZABS Chief Executive Officer, Manuel Mutale presented the certificate to the cooperative at its rice processing centre in Meheba yesterday. Mr Mutale said his institution is proud to present the certificate to the cooperative. “We are very proud as ZABS that we are awarding the certificate of conformity to this facility. What that means is that your product is safe for consumption and it gives the cooperative the assurance that the work they are doing is in compliance with the requirements of the standards,” he said.

Zambia : Prioritise interest of ex-miners, Ministry of Lands implored

North-western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has appealed to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to consider prioritising the interests of the ex-miners, as they allocate the 500 plots in Kalumbila district. Mr Mubukwanu said giving priority to the interest of the ex-miners will seek to address some of the challenges they have been encountering, which includes yearning for land, having settled in the province for a very long time. ZANIS reports that the Minister was speaking when a team from the Ministry of Lands, who are in the province to allocate 500 plots to ex-miners in Kalumbila district, called on him.

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the rights of citizens and refugees are upheld and respected. Kalumbila District Commissioner, Robinson Kalota said this in a speech read on his behalf by District Administrative officer, Frank Siatwinda, when he graced the International Human Rights Day whose theme was: Recover Better- Stand Up for Human Rights which marked the end of 16 days of activism against GBV held under theme: Orange the World in Meheba Refugee Settlement Block C yesterday. “Government is committed to ensuring that the rights of citizens and even those of refugees are respected in this country,” he said.
