Breakthrough Leader: Jay Pinckney

Growing up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Jay Pinckney spent a lot of time in the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his father. By the time he was in the eighth grade he knew he wanted to be a marine biologist, part of the generation fascinated by Jacques Cousteau’s undersea adventures.
But his ties to the sea go back even further; he is the 13
th generation of Pinckneys to grow up in South Carolina. The first Pinckney to settle in the Carolinas was a pirate, arriving in 1692.

DECATUR, Ga. (WDAM) - William Carey University’s nationally-ranked softball is headed to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ national softball tournament.
The 13th-ranked Lady Crusaders (39-9) capped a perfect run through the Southern States Athletic Conference postseason Saturday with a 5-3, come-from-behind victory over Faulkner University.

Biology major draws on her experience to help students understand mental health issues

Jessica Teresi, a biological sciences major from Northfield, New Jersey, suffered two severe concussions one in high school and one her sophomore year in college that affected her mental health. But the medical challenges also resulted in gained resiliency skills and a commitment to advocacy and service.
As a Changing Carolina Peer Leader at the University of South Carolina, she devoted time to helping other college students navigate mental health issues. She is part of Changing Carolina’s Mental Health Special Interest Group at the Center for Health
