Environmental impact of wall

The environmental impact of the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico is often overlooked. In light of Earth Day on April 22, I would like to call attention to an ecological issue at the border. President Biden’s 60-day pause on border wall construction has allowed time to reassess the environmental impact on endangered species. The wall currently acts as a barrier for species’ migration and has damaged the surrounding habitat of highly migratory wildlife, including the jaguar and ocelot.
Now is the time to direct funding towards the restoration of habitat and to protect the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Currently, the REAL ID Act of 2005 allows the Secretary of Homeland Security to waive environmental protections such as the ESA.
