Treatment of Severe Behaviors in Children with Autism

An interview with Dr. Megan Boyle When these children come to Boyle’s clinic, they are between the ages of 3 and 8. Even so, the severe behaviors have become part of the life and learning history for the child and family. Caregivers have at least some knowledge of what the child wants or needs when the child engages in the behavior, which means it is a communication method for the child. So, when the family seeks treatment for the severe behaviors, Boyle warns families that it won’t change overnight. Missouri State Professor Creating Treatment Plans for Autistic Children

Missouri State Professor Creating Treatment Plans for Autistic Children A Missouri State professor is working to prepare the next wave of educators for dealing with the behaviors of children with autism. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 1 in 54 children in the United States have an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and the rate is four times higher in boys and girls. With more school districts “mainstreaming” children with autism in non-special education classes, future teachers will need to learn to watch for the signs of an ASD and learn procedures to deal with their behavior. Dr. Megan Boyle, associate professor of Special Education at MSU, runs a clinic for children with ASD. One of the areas she has studied in-depth to provide treatment options is for elopement, a term used for when autistic children unexpectedly leave an area without permission.
