tainted lettuce can be lethal. meg oliver reports. reporter: the concern over people eating e. coli- continues to grow. the centers for disease control issued a food safety alert reporting 27 more cases this week. of the nearly 70 cases, 39 had to be hospitalized. e. coli can be very serious. reporter: infectious disease expert dr. william schaffner at vanderbilt says young children and the elderly are most at risk. symptoms like cramping and diarrhea can start anywhere from two to eight days after eating contaminated food. 5% to 10% of people diagnosed with e. coli can also suffer kidney damage. there s usually no fever, so it can be subtle, and people don t recognize it as an infectious cause right away. reporter: the c.d.c. is urging folks and stores to throw away all romaine products from salinas, california, the
