Laws require that before applying for registration of any product in the international market it has to be protected under the geographical indication (GI) laws of that country. The Dawn reported that there are no rules of the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act, 2020 enacted in March this year and as a result, Basmati is not yet a protected product in Pakistan.
