culture, the worth of a country is generally measured by the extent to which they adhere to u.s. dictates. and so, had they simply turned him over and disregarded all legal constraints, i think u.s. political and media circles would have celebrated hong kong as some sort of beacon of the rule of law. now that they ve issued a fairly defiant statement to the u.s., reif you seeing to submit to their dictate, i think you re going to see all sorts of combinations of hong kong and certainly recriminations from the u.s. government toward hong kong. that s what the u.s. does, it punishes other governments for refuseing to comply with u.s. demands. okay, glenn greenwald, thanks for joining us this morning. and we re going to be right back. related to national security. and i also think that there s not a good understanding of the importance of this issue either in media circles in general, or in the wider public. the free press goes to the heart of what democracy is supposed to be about. i want has to do with the free flow of information and if you have if voters are not well informed about the issues, then democracy loses all of its meaning because it s an ignorant vote that is cast and what this is really about is intimidation. you indict people and you scene people to prison if you can and what that is it send as chill out there and nobody wants to talk to reporters about the sensitive issues any more and it has been very effective. there s a chill in washington and people are more reluctant than ever to talk about national security issues. where i wonder does it come
attack. that is something that should be seen as a conspiracy and a scandal. is the main stream press with some fresh reporting now starting to do the job it should have done all along? jimgarity, contributing editor at national review. margaret carlson and bob cusack. on fox news and others contend. yes. in the media circles if the conservative press is amtrusted in something, that delegitimizes it. we can t pay too much attention to that. i think conservative media does a pretty good job and even if you think we re like a broken clock. like the questions from day one were there. my goodness, how could this not be so protected? what was done that night? we never got good answers. there s always been a ton of questions there.
but it does seem haven t seen a single denial from nbc saying the idea that he will be replaced at the end of 2014 when his contract expires by jimmy fallon. nobody is knocking it down. that looks like it will happen. joe, you did a terrific piece on the matt lauer scandal being billed into media circles. you didn t tell anybody let s look at two front pages. one is a hollywood reporter, almost exactly a year ago when matt signed this $25 million deal to continue the today show and there he is as the hottest guy in the business. cut forward a year. a picture from the same set, hollywood reporter had, and that tells the story. not a good morning. hard to think of anyone who hasn t been involved in a tiger woods scandal or anything of that nature whose brand has been so apparently damaged in such a short space of time over somebody leaving the show that most experts agreed probably wasn t working on the show.
