WEST NEWFIELD, Maine – Did you know that 125,000 U.S. deaths occur each year because patients do not take their medicines as prescribed? That’s many more deaths than those from liver or kidney disease, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, or opioid overdose.
Patients who don’t fill their prescriptions at all or who skip doses or split tablets to reduce their drug expenses risk not only their own health. Their untreated conditions frequently result in avoidable emergency room and hospital care that unnecessarily costs this country’s health care system hundreds of billions of dollars every year.
