connected to russia s doping scandal. three of them are also on the list of russians indicted in robert mueller s russian meddling investigation. frank figliuzzi is still here. frank, this was a story put on my radar by chuck rosenberg. we ve been dying to ask you about it all day. tell us about the significance of this and what does it tell us about what russia is up to while we re busy fighting each other to death over domestic politics? well, first, welcome to the new breed of espionage today. the spies aren t now wearing cloaks and daggers, they re sitting in front of computer screens. and some of these very same people that were indicted in this hacking operation are the same people that putin used to and were indicted by mueller for hacking involving the russia investigation. so this is what this is how it s going to play out from now on. this is the new battlefield, cyber. so we re dealing with a country that is incredibly sophisticated.
that the eight counts of conviction were spread out among the different tranches of things that he was accused of so the prosecution will be able to argue at sentencing that the judge should consider everything. reporter: the conviction is a boost for robert mueller. manafort was the first person he charged presumably to force his cooperation in the meddling investigation. manafort s lawyer spoke only briefly, thanking the judge and jury for what they said was a fair trial. mr. manafort is disappointed of not getting acquit als all the way through or a complete hung jury on all counts. he is evaluating all of his options at this point. reporter: the judge hasn t set a sentencing date for paul manafort but he could face up to ten years in prison and next month he goes on trial all over again, this time in federal court in washington where he s charged with failing to register as a lobbyist for ukraine, witness tampering and financial fraud. frances. thanks to pete williams. on
calling russian interference a hoax and a special counsel investigation a witch hunt. abby phillip joins us from the white house. this morning, calling it all a hoax and a witch hunt. is the president telling us how he really feels about all of this, script aside? reporter: it seems that he certainly is. the president often reverts back to this position of calling it a hoax. the white house is saying that he meant to say that the meddling investigation, the collusion investigation was a hoax, not the russian interference itself. the president himself made it clear, he was talking about the russian interference in the election in 2016. the president is spending the morning dealing with the fallout from a tweet that he sent last night, all caps, threat aimed at iran. the question everyone is asking this morning is why. why now?
