For much of Mebane s history, the idea it could one day have too many apartments might ve seemed outlandish. Well into the 20th century, Mebane was a mill town whose population never topped 3,000 residents. Sitting on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region, the city - pronounced quickly as “meb-an” - was a mile wide and a mile long, with a tidy downtown of brick warehouses, a movie theater, and shops serving as the community hub. “Everybody was familiar with each other,” said Traci Davenport, executive director of the Mebane Historical Museum. “It was small, but it’s not like the sidewalks rolled up at 5 p.m. There was a hum to the place at night.”
