guys lose to these folks? you re right, there are local communities all throughout this country who are incredibly hurt and they say let s not address them, let s cut them. and let s give tax breaks to the very richest people in the country. i don t understand how the democratic party loses to that platform. trillions of dollars. the american people were so upset over just what you said jobs. they want jobs, they want this country to thrive. they re upset about the debt. they have a right to be upset about the debt. you get the debt problem solved by having a productive robust economy, and that s why people have to be working. we can t have people being idle across this country. that would heal so much. i think many people, including the tea party members that were elected, there are many of them very well intentioned, but they re not familiar with the programs. so they might want to take a meat ax rather than a scalpel. and i think we re now going to get into the discussions where
they believe they can take the optimistic higher road with that message. and they re setting up a fight with republicans over, should there be some government spepding on some priorities americans care about? a fight they d be happy to have. a meat ax. you always have all the good metaphors there. jess, thank you. still ahead many government offices and schools, look at this, they are closing early today because of the winter storm in the northeast. it is intensifying. also, the images were fantastic. case in point, you saw one, lawmakers from different parties sitting together at the state of the union last night. but was it enough for the senator who first proposed the idea? let s ask him, next. for pain?
if you propose to do what we said, you will not save as much money. where? completely across the board. education? there is going to be a lot of things. pell grants, scholarships for students look, if you rewind the tape and look at the nature of the spending that has gone on in the past two years, it has gotten to the point where a house majority was completely squandered. and the department of education budget is going to be slashed? well, thoughtful cuts all of the way across the board. well, if you get your way, it will go through the house and the senate, and the president has to sign it, but what about the department of transportation, and the infrastructure and highways is that going to be slashed again? well, thoughtful cuts that is going to be real reasoned. there is nobody with a meat ax on these thing, but if you take a step back and look at the number of new federal employees that have grown under the administration and there are
care would you stroet shut down the government? i m not negotiating on your show here. but i can tell you, there s not a great deal of willingness on the part of my democratic colleagues to bail out the boehner congress. i think the problem, congressman, as i see this going forward, what i see is the republicans using a scalpel not a meat ax. i totally agree. the public will not stand style while they shut down the government but they will use a scalpel, say no funding for liz whether warren the consume e protection agency, for instance, with dodd-frank. no funding, for instance, for the office they re supposed to get involved in the rating agencies which were the core of the financial crisis, and so i see that there will be a scalpel used to carve away the most important pieces of reform packages passed. that worries me. how do you respond to that? let s wait and see. remember, now that these thing, in statute, there s a law, a legal requirement for these steps to go forward. so
