bar r and make recommendations as to what actions should be taken. whether any current, present, criminal indictments should be sought. of course if it involves culpability by the president. a sitting president cannot be or should not be indicted. so would the indictment be held or the information held for indictment for the day after the president is out of office? that s something that we don t know at this point. you work for mueller, there s a big political price that would come with doing something like that. i know you re supposed to be able to keep it separate but a little bit would be the measure of a man and woman doing the job. do you think that bob mueller, in your experience, that he would do something like make a move on the president of the united states if he thought it was right even though he knows it would be a huge battle about whether he was right to even suggest it, whether it could even happen and he would be under tons of scrutiny.
congressional delegation. joining us now, msnbc political analyst yamiche alisyn door in arlington, virginia, and in richmond, virginia, jeff bennett who has been spending the weekend down in the richmond area. jeff, you are in the state capital. many of the people we have heard from, the influential lawmakers, both democrats and republicans, they re focused on the national stage and national mess ageing. go local for us. what are actual residents telling you? right. and this is a fraught issue. we ve been talking about the politics of it. when you talk about the personal aspect of it, i ve been talking with people about how they view ralph northam the man. that s the big question. how do you judge the measure of a man? do you judge him by what he did or says he didn t do 35 years ago or do you judge him by the kind of governor he is now by the kind of policies he embraces now? we went to richmond s south side, a bunch of people who self-identified as democrats. you got this really
running again, and he said, yes, the winds had changed, and the people didn t want me anymore. and all those years later, i saw the hurt that he still felt about losing the second election, about not being in the office for eight years. and it just reminded me, so many times we see these people run, and you run and you run, but there is a hurt afterwards, even though he was so respectful about the people who followed him and about the respect for the office. i could go on and on. it is the behind the scenes things that i think were really the measure of a man. they didn t have to invite me to their home. the whole family was there. in celebration. for his birthday. when i came in that morning, to their compound, and they don t even like the word compound, there were two golf cart, one said property of 41, hands off. the other said, property of 43, hands off and i m like what s up with that? and he said oh, those grand children, they will take the
why are we having this discussion? we are having because we got to the point, as we just said where she s marshaled no new evidence and you can t really go anywhere further down the road on the supposedly crime that happened.er so instead we are putting on trial high school drinking and yearbook phrases. laura: but her drinking never came up. a lot of things never came up. laura: i m saying, why if brett kavanaugh s beers and- how many beers but why is that not relevant? republicans were scared tors death to question her.an laura: everybody is scared but this is a guy s life the line. s hold on. ari, go ahead. the yearbook episodes were one of the saddest stories we saw today. the notion that the united state senators think that would you put in your yearbook when you re a 17-year-old is relevant to your life today, and is a measure of a man, is preposterous. at one point i thought he was going to say, you were in the french club. does that have to do with
president trump just doesn t really align with my values. he called my friends s.o.b.s. you would feel like, all right, i understand why you don t want to go? why, because the president. i m joined now by mike lupica and shermicah singleton who worked on three republican presidential campaigns and is a writer. shermicah, what do you think? i think if you truly want to test a man s character and the measure of a man, give him power, right? and as we have seen throughout the presidency of donald trump lemati problatic parts w he is, if you will. and it s really complex. i think when you think about the robert mueller investigation, you think about what s going on with paul manafort, there is, indeed, a darkloud that continues to linger over this you know, i m going to go ahead and redirect you to the topic at hand. yes, so my point, ari, is this. i think the president is simply using this as a distraction. hmm.
