said hold on, a deal s not done until a deal is done. what did president trump win? he won a headline that served the markets. did he serve the country? we certainly don t know yet. with me john harwood. let s walk through this. because at the core, if you talk to people around the country, farmers, for example, even those who will be hurt, they re happy the president is addressing this. but what he s done thus far is created a big old mess. of course he has. and if you wanted to give a name or a true headline to this announcement they had yesterday, it would be that president trump said i ve agreed to stop hurting the economy. this was something created by him and now he is in the face of a lot of resistance, a lot of upset among his constituents as well as his political adversaries, come out and said i m going to stop that and we re going to talk. guess what? the talks that they have agreed to have, and you played that
which would remove more than 99%. malaysia, singapore, and peru. another deal that leaves the u.s. behind. joining me john harwood. john, this new deal, it sends a strong signal to the world, two of largest economies joining together for trade, something that donald trump wants in the face of this administration s protectionism and tariffs. this is the hard part to understand. rest of the world is moving forward with freer trade. donald trump is now becoming the world s symbol for protecti protectionism. well it seems to be hard to understand for the president of the kbroounited states but it s hard to understand for people who look at economic reality. that is that these trade agreements, assist the u.s. economy, the president has initiated trade conflicts with our allies, as well as with china. he s, as you mentioned, pulled out of the trans-pacific partnership and the rest of the
they ve got to do a bunch of stuff when august recess is over. and all that rubber is going to hit the road at that point, right? we got to keep the government funded. they ve got to raise the debt limit. and the plan is to take up to take up tax reform. right. and that s sort of a heavy lift. and the truth is, though, on the details of that, trump doesn t have sort of a strong point. so i don t see that necessarily as a clash point. i do think on immigration, where you ve got the as john harwood was saying earlier, the business community really doesn t want to restrict illegal immigration. and the republicans, like the democrats are very cozy with the business community. so that s where you could really see a big split between trump and his party. but one of the things that has to me sort of characterized this first period as we head towards the august recess, i ve watched a few administrations come in. and there is a general way it work, particularly the united government.
that s what you see in quinnipi quinnipiac. that s what you see in congress. john harwood who was just on is exactly right. they re ignoring him. you can t get things done simply by yelling at glenn thrush. and i think they re badly mistaken if they think this the s going to help them get out of the hole. one thing that is striking to me in watching this is, and i m in touch with a lot of folks who work in immigration law and immigrant communities, and the one place that they have delivered in some ways on the trump agenda a lot of stuff has been stonewalled things have really changed if you re an immigrant in this country, if you re related to an unauthorized immigrant. yes. it s really changed. oh, yes. this may be performance, but what is happening on the ground is quite dramatic. and they are delivering. they re delivering in terms of the attitude. the i.c.e. agents feel completely unshackled. they re delivering on the detentions. they re not necessarily delivering
santa monica does is he plays like he is the working man s friend. and what we really saw there was someone who is not interested in any of the facts, not interested in any of the answers, not interested in really helping people. he just wants to get into a fight with the media, because that s what these people do. it s no longer enough. that s what you see in quinnipiac. that s what you see in congress. john harwood who was just on is exactly right. they re ignoring him. you can t get things done simply by yelling at glenn thrush. and i think they re badly mistaken if they think this the s going to help them get out of the hole. one thing that is striking to me in watching this is, and i m in touch with a lot of folks who work in immigration law and immigrant communities, and the one place that they have delivered in some ways on the trump agenda a lot of stuff has been stonewalled things have really changed if you re an immigrant in this country, if you re related to an unautho
