i m anna cabrera. thanks for rolling on in the 3:00 hour with me. we begin with breaking news. severe winter weather causing problems across the eastern half of this country. talking about snow ice, rain freezing fog causing two travel nightmares. on the left of your screen that is a delta jet that went off the runway at laguardia airport four hours ago. the inbound flights are still cancelled until tonight. there on the right side of your screen hundreds of drivers are stranded on highways in kentucky. we will have an interview with somebody who among those trapped coming up. first, to that delta airlines jet. it s an md-88 and skidded off the runway this morning. a harrowing end of a flight coming from atlanta. the shaken passengers were forced to evacuate using emergency exits. listen to one of them who shot video right after getting off the plane. i just survived. thank you, new york for having
guardia airport in a terrible snowstorm. the weather has been awful for hours and it just got a lot worse for all of the people on delta flight 1086 coming in from atlanta into new york city s la guardia airport. this is how those passengers landed on runway 13. in this md-88 aircraft with 125 passengers on board and five crew members. this is how they deplaned. you can see them exiting that over the wing exit and sliding down the chutes to the back of the wing. if there s any reason to read the safety card in the back of the seat in front of you when you get on an airplane, this is it, folks. only certain areas of that airplane were able to be opened. clearly the one in the front did not open because it s jammed through the fence. this is effectively what happened after that plane landed at 11:10 this morning eastern time at la guardia airport.
breaking news here at cnn. we are covering a weather story that has branched out into a lot of accidents and small crises in fact. the latest incident just happening a little over an hour ago at la guardia airport in new york. that is an md-88. it s flight 1086 that was supposed to land here in new york from atlanta. it landed, skidded, went up and over that berm through a fence. passengers having to get out the exits onto the wing and slide down to the runway. some not wearing anything other than what they were waring when they landed. a fuel leak also ensued and basically a complete stop of all traffic in and out of la guardia airport until 7:00 tonight. pla planes that were supposed to be coming in diverted somewhere else. planes going out sitting there
washington. we begin with the breaking news the emergency situation at new york s laguardia airport in the snow. the faa tells nbc news that delta flight 1086 was landing coming in from atlanta when it slid off the runway. and nbc s tom costello joins us with more. tom, you were talking about the arrester beds we know that the runway there is surrounded by water. we don t know but it certainly looks like that was the last line of defense. well, yeah i want to preface that yet again, we don t know if arrester beds played a role in this plane i won t call it a crash going off the end of the runway. just to recap if you re just joining us. this is an md-88, the customized version for delta airlines they took possession of in the late 80s and early 90s. in this case we had 120 people on board and 5 crew members. the faa telling us this happened at 11:09 a.m. when flight 1086
for the airport to advise of runway condition, and they probably did. it might be a situation where they just had to get this flight down. again, we don t know exactly what happened here. the problem whether the problem was in the air or happened only when that flight landed. this is the best picture we ve had so far. you can see the passengers evacuating this delta flight 1086, originated in atlanta, landed here in new york city just a short time ago. it s an md-80 aircraft. you can also see clearly the nose of that plane pushed up over the berm at laguardia, through the fence there. i don t know exactly where that is at laguardia. so many people here in new york fly in and out of laguardia all the time. at laguardia, the flights don t go across country. laguardia has shorter runways than other airports in the new york area, jfk and newark. as of now, no cross country
